Post Might as well.....
A little over a month ago I broke my hand. Now after spending this last month with 3 pins in my right hand I have become pretty handy with my left. I tryed using keybinds before and just got frustrated because it felt really awkward(sp) doing the majority of the work with my left hand. I REALLY want to stop clicking and will take this little break I have to learn it. I mostly PVE so I figure if i can get used to it in PVE maybe i can start doing some PVP eventuallly. Does anyone have a really simple starting point as far as keybinds go for beginer keybinders? (PVE...Mut if its not too much to ask). All i think i really need to do is set the keys to what I find i can remember them as and just play it for a while till i get used to it. I've read over Zuggy's post on keybinds but its just weird looking at it from a shamans pov. I need to see it with rogue abilities, maybe that will help me along with a LOT of repetition. ( and to not get frustrated and give up )

The problem with keybinds is that everyone's hands are a little different, their keyboard layout is a little different, and they favor using some fingers more than others. The best advice anyone can give you is to place your hand in roughly the same position as Zuggy's guide tells you, and see where your fingers lie naturally. The buttons your fingers naturally touch should be the buttons that you bind to your most used abilities: mutilate, eviscerate, slice and dice, KS, etc.

I'd recommend either using a modifier key (like ctrl or alt, whichever is easiest for you to hit with your pinky) to bind your cooldown related abilities like cold blood, vanish and evasion to the most easily reached keys too, as most of those seal a kill or keep you from dying, and you need to be able to hit them instantly.

The rest of your keys can be set however you want really; make the binds reachable, but not uncomfortable. Good luck.

ps. I still use the nostromo n52 game pad. I picked one up 3 or so years back and have used one ever since. I like having the d-pad to move with my thumb (well, strafe since you really don't have to ever back up and i usually use my mouse to run,) and having 15 buttons easily reachable. Additionally, I set one of my extra mouse buttons to control, so I have 15 more ready with an additional mouse button. I don't even touch my keyboard unless I am chatting with someone in game anymore. If you have 40 or 50 bucks laying around and don't mind spending a day getting use to a new peripheral, I'd recommend looking into one.

I've always wanted to try the Nostromo n52. I am thinking about picking one up this evening. Having all those buttons available will be well worth it. I hear it just takes a while to get used to, but then again so does keybinding. Are you still doing any PVE Erk? I will try to map out all my keys before I get the pad then just adjust to whatever is most comfortable.

I join up on a PUG naxx or vault or something every here and there, but don't raid at all anymore really... I originally bought my nostromo when I was 100% PVE minded though (still in molten core IIRC). It works great in both environments.

I have mine set up like this:

1 2 3 4 5
6 7 8 9 0
c1 c2 c3 c4

Then, one of my mouse buttons is alt, and so I have another set of buttons that are alt1, alt2, etc. The thumb button over the D pad is = if I remember correctly.

I'll post a screenshot of my UI if you like. I would recommend using bartender or bongos to let you reshape your bars to mirror your layout. I actually have the buttons kind of mirroring the setup of the n52, although I've used it so long that it really isn't necessary anymore.

That is sorta what I did. mine is like this

Shift 1 2 3 -
ctrl 4 5 6 =
alt 7 8 9
**edit** and i THINK the button under my thumb is set to 0 but i dont know if that will stay.

That is what felt comfortable to me when i laid my hand on the pad. Using the pinky for the modifiers ie: shuft ctrl and alt. ring and middle fingers for the 123456789 keys. and the index finger for - = and the scroll button. all i have to do now is figure out what buttons to map those to when playing wow, then put abilities with them. might need some help on that part but cant really do much at work atm. I am running bartender4 so it shouldnt be hard from what I hear.

I am really having trouble getting movement down. i have forward on the thumbpad set to up arrow key, back on the thumbpad set to down arrow key, here is where it gets tricky. How do you do it? i am assuming put left on thumbpad to left strafe and right on thumbpad to right strafe. Thats where i am kinda stuck. i think wow default setting have numpad on keyboard set like this 7 strafe left , 9 strafe right.. correct me if im wrong. DO i put left thumbpad set to 7 and right thumbpad set to 9????

Also i have a 6 button mouse. I will be using that for some abilities as well. first things first though i need to get down the movement.

Let me know if that confuses you at all... kinda hardto explain without looking at it.

I tried using an N52 pad for a couple of weeks, just could never get used to constantly switching between that and the keyboard. Never realized how much I use the other in-game default hotkeys.

My D pad has right as strafe right, left and strafe left, up move forward and back move backward. One trick I could tell you is to unbind the up+right, up+left, etc, because it tends to confuse WoW for some reason and your character won't move well. That could be an issue you are facing. I also have one of my mouse buttons bound to run forward since I don't like having to hold down the D pad if I need to walk forward for a while or am chasing someone down, (default was num lock IIRC).

And, I think that WoW's default has q as strafe left and e as strafe right. I changed that a long time ago to a as strafe left and d as strafe right, so I am not 100% sure if my memory is correct or not.

And as for Zuggy, I never have to use the keyboard when I am playing unless I am talking. I guess it depends on how many keybinds you have to use to be effective. If I recall correctly, I have 27 keybinds on my rogue and somewhere around 32 on my druid. Setting things up the way I did, its only a matter of getting used to holding down a button on your mouse to open up 15 more keys with my left hand. Since I have a few extra binds on my mouse, I have more keys available than I need. Out of curiosity,(if you can remember) what kinds of keys did you find you needed on your keyboard that you couldnt bind to the n52?

ERK, HOW DO YOU HAVE YOUR MOVEMENT SET UP. I RAN INTO A PROBLEM USING NUMPAD KEYS ASSIGNED TO MY DPAD. WHEN I WOULD BE STRAFING AND HOLDING DOWN SHIFT FOR A MODYFIER, IT WOULD LIKE AUTORUN ME IN STRAFE. I CHANGED IT TO QWES LAST NITE AND DIDNT PLAY WITH IT MUCH AFTER THAT BUT SEEMED LIKE IT WORKED. AS SOON AS I GET ALL MY KEYS DOWN I WILL WORK ON TWEAKING MY UI.... IT DESPRATLY NEEDS A MAKEOVER , SPECIALLY AFTER THIS NEW PATCH. BASIC THINGS I NEED ARE OMEN, BIGWIGS OR DBM, ALSO HAVE A SPELL WATCHER THAT SHOWS DURATIONS ON MY SND RUPTURE POISONS AND COMBO POINTS AND STUFF.
