Mage Focus Macros
June 20, 2008 by Zuggy
When it comes to mages, well, there’s really no limit to the amount you can do to improve keep improving your game. From kiting to crowd control, bursting down the target and assisting your team mates, there’s always something you can do better.
Perhaps one of the most effective ways to quickly improve your play is through effective targeting, and there’s no better way to manage this mechanic than through focus macros.
If you aren’t familiar with focus macros, how they work, and how you can set them up I suggest you check out my focus macros guide. Also, if you’re just looking for more generic macros check out my mage macro guide.
Focus Counterspell Macro
#showtooltip Counterspell
/cast [target=focus] Counterspell
Focus Counterspell Combo Button
#showtooltip Counterspell
/cast [mod:shift, target=focus, exists, nodead]; Counterspell
*This will cast counterspell on your regular target, though when you click the modifier (which is currently shift, you can also set it to alt or control) it will cast on your focus target. Great to consolidate buttons.
Focus Polymorph Macro
#showtooltip Polymorph
/cast [target=focus] Polymorph
Complex Polymorph Macro
/clearfocus [target=focus,dead]
/focus [target=focus,noexists]
/cast [target=focus]Polymorph
/p Sheeping %t Don’t Break!
*This macro will clear your old focus target if it’s dead and also clear it if it no longer exists. Next, it will set a focus on your current target and start casting sheep. Finally, it sends a warning to your party not to break the target you just polymorphed.
Frost Bolt Kiting Macro
#showtooltip Frostbolt
/cast [target=focus] Frostbolt (Rank 1)
*You could choose to make this a max rank frost bolt, though I consider this more of a crowd controlling mechanism than anything else. Since the rank 1 frost bolt is so fast it’s great to just have a macro you can use to crowd control your focus target while still managing your primary target.
Focus Ice Lance Macro
#showtooltip Ice Lance
/cast [target=focus] Lance
*Effective for damaging multiple targets at once. With as much as you are casting nova as deep frost you may have additional global cool downs while kiting to toss ice lance both on your primary target and additional targets which eat a nova.
Focus macros are a great way for mages to help elevate their game. Their usefulness both in watching your focus target’s casts as well as adding various macros will allow you to manage your crowd controls and other spells much easier.
